How to use this blog: Signing up!

This blog was made to help us interact about art and share interesting links easily. If you feel a bit overwhelmed as to how to participate, do not fret.

First off:
You do not have to sign up for anything in order to read the blog. So, you are not missing anything if you have been hesitant to go all the way. However, in order for you to be able to comment, you will have to have a username. If you have been using the internet for a while, you have the option to use these different types of usernames,
GoogleAccount
LiveJournal
Wordpress
Typepad
AIM
OpenID

If you don’t have any of these, you can sign up for a "GoogleAccount" (=the username for this blog) through this blog.

How to sign up:
1.Through the Email I sent you
I believe I have all sent you an email inviting you to join the blog. The heading of the email was “You have been invited to contribute to Amanda’s blog”, so you might have been a bit confused. It is called “my” blog simply because I created it, so just disregard the fact that Julie's name isn't mentioned. If you can’t find it, it could also be that the email got put in your spam box. Once you click the link in the email, it leads you to a page where you can sign up. Since most of you probably don’t have a GoogleAccount, click the link “Create your account now.”
Once you are there, you can plug in the email address you want to use, and choose your display name (=username). It would be helpful if your display name was close to your name, so that we can all recognize who commented on what. Also, make sure to un-check the notification feature, since you probably don’t want to receive bothersome emails from them.

2. Through the blog itself
Once you go to juliegraham-art.blogspot.com, there is a thin grey toolbar at the top of the page. It says things like “search blog” (which is a helpful tool, but let’s talk about that later), and on the right hand side it says “Sign in.” Click this button, and it will lead you to the main blog website prompting you to “Create a blog!” Click this button - - this will sign you up, but you will NOT HAVE TO create your own blog.
Once you are here, you can plug in the email address you want to use, and choose your display name(=username). It would be helpful if your display name was close to your name, so that we can all recognize who commented on what. Also, make sure to un-check the notification feature, since you probably don’t want to receive bothersome emails from them.

And voila! You are signed up!

directions to #6 Vernon Street

Gaby's studio is at #6 Vernon Street, corner of Central St. in Somerville. If you can't find street parking, park in the lot behind the building. If door is closed call me at 617 669-9801. Walk up one flight, down the hall to the last hallway on the left, studio is marked with my name.

Directions from McGrath Hwy....from Cambridge side. Take the left just before the metal bridge. Sign on right side of highway will say "Highland Ave. Medford St." After you have turned left, bear right on Medford Street. Third light is Central, take a left. Vernon is just down the hill; you will see the red brick factory building.

Directions from McGrath Hwy from the North:  Take a right immediately after the metal bridge. Follow directions above.

From Route 2. Best option seems to be to take Rte 2 to 16. Left on 16 to Mass Ave. right on Mass Ave. to Porter Square. In Porter Square fork left onto Somerville Ave.  Go left on Central St. On Central you will cross over Summer Street and Highland Ave. After Highland go down the hill and see the red brick factory building on the corner of Vernon on your left. It is probably best to enter parking lot before you get to the building.

Call me if you need directions from other places. 781 396-7037 or 617 669-9801

Plaster-Gesso Formula

The plaster/gesso formula is a great painting surface on canvas, panel or paper. On paper, you shouldn't use more that 1 or 2 layers. On panel I use maybe 4-6....I had a student who always used 10. Light sanding is the key.

The oil painting medium I mentioned can be used as a medium or glaze. But remember the fat over lean theory: mix galkyd, stand oil (and gamsol, optional). Gamblin has a GREAT info sheet with all their products and their uses. You can get it at the school store, or any other art supply store that sells Gamblin.

Plaster-Gesso Formula:
• Mix completely 1 cup water
1/3 cup matte medium
• Add plaster to mixture, sifting through hand, not in big clumps at one time
• Mix completely
• Add an almost equal amount of THICK gesso (Utrecht Gesso works best)
• Mix completely
• Store in plastic container with tight lid, and it should be good for 2 or 3 days.
• Apply in thin coats with putty knife (3 or 4 coats, or more, as you like)
• Sand lightly between coats
• Voila!
